PROPER NAME FOR WINDOWS

BIGJIM05 | Posted in General Discussion on February 14, 2006 02:33am

I need to replace some windows in my home and would like your help please.

What is the proper term when you want the windows to come together in a complete frame that just gets inserted in the old window opening?

I have a back bedroom with three windows in it and would like to just knock out the old and get a new group of three -ganged together and ready to shim in place.

Thanks for your help.

Type- Replacement Window,  Mulled together by the factory if possible

when windows are joined they are termed "mulled"

so two windows joined togerther would be a  "double mullion".. or a double mulled unit

3 would be a triple mullion, or a triple mulled unit

Are these "mulled" windows that uncommon since I cant find them in my local stores?

And again thanks for answering so fast.

Technically, the windows are ordered separately, and "mulled" together at the factory with a mullion strip.  It should be a small upcharge per mullion strip.

Depending on the size of the opening, the window unit might be to large, to be shipped already mulled together.

I doubt you're gonna find them at HD or Lowes ...

any decent real lumber yard should have a guy that handles the window ordering ...

that's the guy U wanna talk to.

You mull on site or order factory mulled.

          Opinion please

Would you feel it would be cheaper to order a triple mulled window and have it installed or just order three seperate windows and have them installed and any old wood just redone?

Triple mulled , because of labor.

What are the three units you're replacing? If they're not a triple unit you will have header issues requiring three singles instead. How are you going to set them in the window frame? Can you get a massive triple unit through the house and up into the room? Triples in new construction save time for the installer. Replacement jobs are often better done, if not only possible, with singles and the occasional double with help. Don't be enamored with factory mulled doubles or triples, they're often just a gang of singles stapled together with flimsy steel straps and 3/8" wood strips, maybe with a 3/4" head and sill board which is often only for "shipping". Perhaps three single units, liberal amounts of shims and some mullion stock will serve you better?

most window mfrs also will mull with a structural pocket ...space between the units for a 2x to break the span of the header

and , some also will mull with a  steel plate for structural support between the  unitsMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore

Factory mulled, as a general rule, but there can be other factors, like time frame, materiasls and labor available, etc
