Hello Everyone,
Does anyone know if there’s a source for replacement spring balances for double-hung windows? I’m not interested in replacing my windows, just the balances.
The windows are about 50 years old, double-hung, single pane, divided lite, 8 over 8 windows. They’re about 42″ wide and about 52″ tall overall.
Also, do I need to be concerned about different spring strengths to compensate for the weight of the sashes? These windows are larger than the typical double-hung and I’m concened that a one-size-fits-all spring balance may be too weak to compensate for their weight.
I’m located in the Boston area.
My thanks for any assistance or advice you can offer!

Thanks Calvin. That looks like a very useful site. They did have one spring balance type for sale there which just may do the trick!

Not sure what you have, but perhaps these would work:

Thanks for the pointer. These are an interesting option - they work more like the traditional ropes&weights (which I prefer) than the embedded coil spring which I currently have. These would require some woodworking (routing out grooves, for the tape hooks and creating a pocket for the reels) but it may be worth it.
Thanks again for the pointer, this site is great!
