I am building a small sun room onto the side of a home, the room has a gable roof one side of gable is flush with existing roof so no problem. The other side of the gable is hard against the side wall of the home. I put my step slashing on this side when shingling, no problem. But now that I am replacing missing side wall shingles the first step flashing ends up behing the side wall shingles. This seems a no no.
How do I deal with this first step to get it in front of the sidewall shingles so any water running down the steps exits in front of the side wall shingles, not behind?

You need to create a "Kick out" .
The first piece of flashing is cut and bent so that it comes out from behind the side wall shingle and directs the water away from the side wall.
( Say a 30 deg angle off the side wall)
To do this sometimes requires two pieces of flashing as well as a vertical slice in the side wall finish material. In your case if you are using side wall shingles you can align the flashing with a joint between shingles hopefully.
If done correctly it won't leak and will direct water off the building and into a gutter if one is used.
There was a good pic of this being done in FHB recently but I don't remember which one. Someone here also posted some pics recently of the kick out being done.
Here is the first page a Google search brought up http://www.thehomeinspector.com/Clients/Newsletter/Kickout/Kickout.html
Matt, Good info, just what he needed I think.
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
