I have an “L-shaped” room that I want to tile on a diagonal with marble. I also want to have some border tiles (that are the same marble) at either end of the “L” that are installed straight (not diagonally set). Should I install border tiles all the way around the space? Also, does anyone have any hints or tips on laying out tile on a diagonal?

Rule #1. Do it right because those diagonal grout lines will show bogus alot quicker. As to the border tile, it looks good except for all the cuts on the field tile when you grout. And that you bet needs to be right or it'll look even crappier. Think if the homeowner will end up covering 90% of it.
*Jon, I've installed a few of these diagonal beauties. The layout is indeed critical and you will simply have to spend some time experimenting full scale. The most important detail in my opinion is eliminating the need for those little tiny chunks of a triangle that will occur in a bad layout. If you have more than four walls or items that you are working to, you will inevitably end up having to emply some tiny triangles. Try to keep these to a minimum and try to place them in inconspicuous places. The layout is complicated but doable. Start with a centerline and it's complimntary square line also centered. Layout the square full scale and determine the border pieces at every critical wall. Shift the layout as necessary. Remeber that for every action there is a reaction. Done well, your diagonal layout will add interest. Done poorly and you will be ill every time your eye hits that awful detail.good luck.blue
*One advantage of a diagonal pattern is that it can hide a room that's out of square. but if you end up with timy pieces of tile along one edge that taper off to nothing, it makes an out or square room more obvious.
*Do what the old timers did and use your border as rubber so that you can have only full and half tiles along the edges of the room. Done right it will work for any size room, any shape, even if it is badly out of square. Takes time but looks great!Good Luck,Dave
