Two questions: Can anyone direct me to photos of dates carved into timbers? Also, is the tradition to carve the year timbers were raised or the house was occupied? Thanks to all.

Can't help you with that, but here's a pic of a tree on my property.
These are called witness trees, they were carved by gov surveyors near section corner marks. The trees are noted in the surveyors book.

This one is wrong, they must have been drinking when they got to my corner.

It indicates it to be the corner of section 29 and 31.
Ain't no suce place, it's actually 29 & 32. Here's the 1990 Cadastral survey mark a few feet away.
