Framing in a new window for a bathroom remodel. The rough opening is 43 in. wide by 34 in. high. I have single trimmer studs on each side that support the header, the trimmer studs are then nailed to 2×4 king studs. The header is made of two 2×6’s with a 1/2 in. piece of plywood in between, all nailed and glued together, probably overkill for a window of this size.
After finishing the framing and looking at info on the web (build first, then research ???), I’m wondering if using a single 2×4 for the rough sill was okay. So, my question is: Can the rough sill 2×4 stud (or whatever you call it) be a single 2×4 or does it have to be two 2x’s nailed together ? Of course, there are lots of cripple (??) studs supporting the sill.
thanks !

If you are worried about it you couldn't go wrong by putting a couple of extra cripple studs below the window. If they were 12" OC you should have more than enough support for a single 2 x 4 sill.
Good luck
Two things -
The header may or not be overkill - the size of the opening is only half the info you need to design a header. You also have to know what it's carrying.
Most of the weitght of the window is probably carried through the nailing flanges. I doubt there's very much weight at all on the sill.
I have PMS and a gun...excuse me, did you have something to say?
