Painting With Benjamin Moore Pros

Sponsored by Benjamin Moore

A tip for painting baseboards: Using a crack-filling blade to keep paint off the floor when painting baseboards

A crack-filling or spackling blade, also known as a putty knife, can be a useful tool for keeping paint off the floor when painting baseboards. Here’s how to use it:

First, load your brush with paint by dipping into the can, and wipe off one side of the brush. You’ll want to have enough paint to cover your surface, but not so much that it drips off the brush.

Push the blade into the joint of the floor and base, raising the handle of the blade just slightly off the floor. On tighter fits, the blade will have to be pushed tightly into the joint to avoid paint seeping around the blade onto the floor.

Using a nylon brush and a light hand, evenly coat the baseboard. The blade will essentially be used to catch and protect the floor from any excess paint.

Work in sections, moving the blade with you as you work. Keep the blade clean by wiping it regularly with a damp cloth to prevent paint buildup.

Using this tip with patience and care will help you move along baseboards quickly and efficiently without getting excess paint on the floor.
