On my current kitchen remodeling job I had to patch a hole in the ceiling and match the existing drywall texture. The old texture looked like it been blown on in big globs and then lightly flattened with a trowel. I didn’t want to call in my drywall contractor for such a small task, or mask off the cabinets to protect them while I sprayed the 1-sq. ft. patch with topping compound. So I tried another approach.
I picked up a nearly empty tube of latex caulk and squeezed out its remaining contents. Then I put a garden hose over its nozzle end. The water blasted off the tube’s plunger and cleaned out the cylinder. Next I filled the tube with drywall compound, replaced the plunger and used my caulking gun to squeeze globs of compound onto the ceiling. Then I flattened the compound with a trowel. Painted to match, the patch is practically invisible.
