This farmhouse in the hills of western Massachusetts uses the vocabulary of a barn but takes liberties along the way. Setting the entrance of the house in a central courtyard provides a sense of intimacy. Using oversized columns of granite to support the house above the porches adds a sculptural element. Horizontal clapboards and small square windows and simple metal roofing round out the look.
