A couple of winters back, I traveled to the British Virgin Islands to spend three days photographing a landscape design. It was refreshing to feel the island heat after a very cold winter in New England. The sun was strong and the landscape lush. It was also a study of light for me and I spent the evenings pouring over my images, planning for the next day. I chose to feature this stone terrace because I was drawn to it each day as the sun climbed high overhead. It was just beyond the formal landscape and hidden from the main house. I had to walk through an orchard abundant with grapefruit, oranges and mangoes and then down a rugged wooden-stepped path with rope handrails. The steep grades of the peninsula were a challenge for the designers. They chose the spot for its spectacular sunset views and its close proximity to the water. I love looking at my photo archives because they vividly transport me back to that time and those spaces. I can still feel the intense heat and hear the sounds of crashing waves.
