This house on Martha’s Vineyard designed by Hutker Architects is a modern interpretation of the traditional beach house. Its 2,300 square feet is broken up into 3 pods containing two bedrooms, a screen porch, a guest room and a “life room” which incorporates the kitchen. Each pod maximizes the views of the water and dune grasses, so much a part of the Vineyard experience. Flat roofs define the individual spaces below and serve to visually ground the building while diminishing its scale in the immediate context. The “life room,” shown here features large windows with dramatic water views and openable transoms on three sides. At night the transparency of the house becomes evident, glowing in the dusky light.
