Firestorm Implications
Codes and Disasters: California wildfires are still raging and are not yet contained.
This tranquil image was shot 13 days ago, and now this location is in the middle of a literal firestorm. Over 20,000 people have been evacuated and 115,000 acres and 1500 buildings have burned. The wildfires are still raging and are not yet contained. The smoke from these fires is so thick that it is affecting air quality in San Francisco (forty miles away).
Sometimes we think about building codes as an unnecessary added expense to a project, from soft-story retrofits to planning for floods. Sometimes these codes can mean the difference between a building surviving a disaster and its occupant’s life or death.
It’s important to remember what’s at stake.
