I’m planning on replacing my existing windows but I’m unsure on how to measure for them if the windows are still in place. I was thinking just measure height and width on the inside drywall then add 1″ to each dimension to give the approx rough opening size. Would that be right?
Thanks,
Mike

All the replacement windows I have worked with fit within the dimensions of the existing sashes, you don't tear out the original window frame.
So, width is the dimension from one side of the sash to the other, measured at the top, middle and bottom, use the smallest number. Height is the bottom of the lower sash to the top of the upper, again with measurements at three points.
My supplier automaticly takes 1/4" off my measurments, that's the actual dimension of the new window, the gap allows the new window to be leveled in the existing frame. The existing parting stops will cover the 1/8" or so gap between the existing frame and the new window.
Be sure to remove the old sash counter weights and insulate the little box where they reside.
Good luck.
Norman,
Thanks. I should have mentioned the windows are aluminum.

I've found that measuring with an old-fashioned folding wood ruler (the kind with the metal rule that slides out for precise measuring) is a good thing for accurate inside-face dimensions, instead of guessing what a bent tape measure is telling you...
Even if you have to pay for the service, have the window supplier measure your windows. And get a copy of the measurements.
Cheap insurance. If you measure them and they don't fit you'll still be liable for the total price.
Too many things can go wrong - a window a bit out of square, you mis-write a measurement, your supplier misreads one of your numbers, etc.
Most suppliers will take plentyof time to show you how to install the windows.
But let them measure!!!!!!!

The last time I measured for replacement windows, I first consulted a dealer for http://www.milgard.com. They gave me a short instructional brochure which described how and where to measure an existing unit.
I measured the windows and made a list which I faxed to several local Milgard dealers for bids.
I did the installation myself and the windows fit very nicely.
Therefore I would suggest that you get instructions for measuring from the manufacturer or a dealer for the windows you plan to use.
