Is there a specific size wire screen ?
I’m looking at screening in a 14’x40′ patio having a 8′ high frame for a covered roof. I’ve found some new 48″X 100′ long, charcoal colored rolls of screening for less than $30 a roll.
These rolls have not moved from the clearance shelves for months. I was wondering if this wire screen opening might be a size that won’t stop flying insects? Is there a size that postively stops mosquitoes?
Thanks again for your help,
Bill

So, how big are the openings in the clearance shelf screen? How big are Texas skeeters?
If screen opening < size of Texas skeeters, then you are good to go!
Delaware has big skeeters but small gnats - gnats can be a problem with a screen but not our skeeters.

Never underestimate the value of a sharp pencil or good light.
I think the boxes said "16X14" grid...I think.
Just down the isle are rolls of fiberglass screening with no grid size printed, but in big lettering is says, "Insect Proof"....

I suspect that 16x14 will keep the mosquitoes out.
I don't know the mesh size of my screens, but mosquitoes are never a problem. So whatever Andersen windows supply as a "standard" screen, is what I have.
You have got me curious - I'll get a mesh count in the morning and let you know.

OK, I was too curious. Made a 1" square on paper, got a flashlight and magnifier and counted tonight while DW held the light. Her question - "This has something to do with Breaktime - doesn't it?" Mumbled incomprehensible reply and resumed counting.
Andersen screen on my sliding door = 18 x 15. No mosquito problems.
14 x 16 is a bit more open but I doubt it would make a difference.
Is here something else different about the clearance screen? Not galvanized wire maybe, so rust becomes a problem?

When I lived in Dillingham AK we had 2 sets of screens. Regular screens and no-see-um screens. Regular screens barley affected the view, no-see-um screens it was tough to see out of. No idea of the mesh count.
Oh yea, short of 20+ knot wind, no air flow.
But worth every penny, hear the birds and bugs and a little breeze and NO NO-SEE-UMS.
no-see-um = little knat that bites and drives a person nutzo
It looks like standars screens are 18x16 or 18x14. And no see um screens are 20x20.http://wholesalescreensandglass.com/.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Screens come in a variety of mesh (hole size) and weights (thread size). There is the finest 'no see um' mesh ... and the extra heavy 'pet' screen. There is even a mesh with varied spacing between the threads; this is supposed to give you greater privacy.
All you can do is look and compare. The easiest way to check hole sizes is to carry a set of #60-#80 wire gage drill bits.
Mosquitoes, btw, vary in size from place to place. There is the sparrow-sized Alaskan variety, to the nearly microscopic desert mosquito. I'd suggest using those drill bits to see what size mesh is most common in your area.
Call your health district, county extension agent or mosquito control district. They should know and may actually have pamphlets.
