VIDEO SERIES: Tile a Barrier-Free Bathroom

Master tile setter Tom Meehan combines a time-tested mortar base with a modern waterproofing membrane and linear drain to create an easy-access shower

Length: 1:36
Produced By: Colin Russell and Chuck Bickford

At age ten, Tom Meehan got his first taste of tile work, mixing mud for his father, a professional tile man. Almost fifty years later, Tom himself is now a master of tile, and together with his wife Lane, owns Cape Cod Tile Works in Harwich, Massachusetts. The couple co-wrote a book for Taunton Press in 2005 titled “Working with Tile” and Tom’s written on all things tile related for Fine Homebuilding magazine since 1991.

To this day, Tom still incorporates what he learned from his father, especially when it comes to his favored method for a tile floor installation: the classic “mud job.”
