Elegantly Simple Illumination

With a perforated, spun-metal shade, this pendant light lends dappled light to any room.

Article Image

With its gently curving shade and frosted-glass diffuser projecting a wide, soft radiance, the A1965 pendant by 20th-century Finnish lighting designer Paavo Tynell is a prime example of form following function. The spun-metal shade is dappled with tiny perforations, letting just enough light through to add a bit of sparkle to any room. Just over 18 in. in diameter, the lamp’s shade is available in several colors of painted aluminum or in Tynell’s signature material—polished brass. The adjustable-height A1965 pendant includes a sleek brass counterweight, while the simpler 1965 variant hangs from a fixed cord. Prices range from $745 for a painted fixed pendant to $1545 for the brass adjustable version.
