High-Performance Roofing, From Stick-Framing to Shingles

Tricky framing transitions, I-joists for rafters, and top-down shingling offer a look at some unconventional but effective techniques.

By Fine Homebuilding Editors

Building a custom, high-performance house often requires builders to innovate and adjust standard building methods. The roof at the FHB House was no different, as the team had to accommodate a continuous layer of exterior sheathing using LVLs and I-joists to stick-frame the roof.

At 3m17s into this video, am I correctly seeing fall protection that wouldn't do much good in a fall? Awful lot of slack in that line, unless I'm mistaken.

    Response to BJu:

The line you are seeing that looks like slack is the pile of lifeline below the rope grab that my lanyard is connected to. It does appear that the lanyard is connected too low and the slack would be incorrect.
Ordinarily the lifeline drapes off the eave edge. But the dangling line was making it hard to install the self-adhering membrane so I pulled it up in a pile until the sheet was installed.

    Where is the like button?
I see the metal strapping on top of roof sheathing along the tops of the rafters? Is strapping tying together the rafters from 2 slopes or is it tying the rafters to the rigde? Is strapping for fighting uplift purposes? Rafter hangers weren't enough?

I've been building for over 30 years and when I observed the way he installed the roof I wanted to pull my hair out. it's got to be the dumbest roof installation I've ever seen.!!!
Obviously money ,time, and manufacturers specifications are not issues on this project .

So why TJI instead of lumber? Cost comparison? Is this typical.
